Free Alpaca Plus Inc. Shrug Pattern
For a quick and easy project, try knitting a shrug. These handy little jackets can be made as evening jackets by adding a bit of sparkle novelty yarn or knit in a plain yarn and it becomes a lightweight, classy jacket to slip on when you don't want to turn up the thermostat.
For an evening style jacket, try knitting with 1 strand of a sparkle yarn and 1 strand of alpaca. The finished effect is visually stunning and keeps you cozy too! A fun way to finish off the shrug is to crochet around the edges with one of the new "eyelash" novelty yarns such as Gedifra Tecno Hair - Spectacular!
This is a very easy pattern. You can customize your own shrug by following the directions at the bottom.
Materials Needed:
300g of Alpaca Yarn (check the Alpaca Plus Trendsetter collection for some great yarn possibilities!)
50 grams Gedifra Tecno Hair (optional)
100 grams sparkle yarn (optional)
3 ¾ mm and 4 ½ mm needles
Tension: 20 rows and 16 sts = 4 inches
- With 3 ¾ mm needles, cast on 38 sts. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 20 rows.
- Change to 4 ½ mm needles, work in st-st, with 3 sts garter sts at each end. This garter stitch edge is kept throughout the entire shrug.
Keeping to pattern, increase 1 st each end every 4th row until 84 sts are reached.
(NOTE: All increases or decreases are done on the inside of the garter stitch rib.)
- Continue even keeping to pattern until desired sleeve length is reached (refer to section below to customize your shrug). Place markers on both sides of the last row.
- Work even in pattern until desired back length is reached (refer to section below to customize your shrug.) Place markers on both sides of the last row.
- Work second sleeve to match first side (matching decreases and ribbing) Cast off.
FINISHING: Sew up sleeves to markers.
Customizing Your Shrug:
- Measure length from armhole to armhole across back = ______ inches. This will be your measurement for your back
- With arms extended horizontally, measure length from wrist to wrist = _______ inches. Take this number and subtract the back measurement as follows:
Wrist to wrist measurement (______ inches) minus back measurement (_____ inches) = _______ inches. Divide this answer by 2: ______ divided by 2 = ______ inches. (This will be your sleeve length.)
With these measurements, you can now work your shrug following the pattern.
